In 2007, Silver won sixth prize in the Paulo Cello Competition, ahead of hundreds of other players. Judging rounds included video submissions and live concerts. Cellists prepared major-repertoire and contemporary concertos, along with a selection from the Bach suites for a "compulsory encore."

The Paulo Cello Competition in Helsinki has been held seven times since its founding in 1991, with cellists from all over the world competing. Silver won sixth prize in 2007, ahead of hundreds of other players.

Applicants submitted videos for initial review. The first live round was a public recital. Semifinal and final rounds had three contrasting concertos performed by three different orchestras in three different cities. Cellists chose from lists of major-repertoire and contemporary concertos, and they had to prepare a selection from the Bach suites for a "compulsory encore."
